Thompson Working Families Achievement Scholarship

The Robert and Ellen Thompson Working Families Achievement Scholarship was founded to provide access to higher education, specifically for students from working families where the cost to attend may have deterred or prevented their enrollment. This scholarship program is based on financial need and rewards academic performance from a student’s first year at BGSU, as well as a commitment to service. This is a three-year scholarship program where students are provided opportunities to Connect, Engage, and Serve and have the support of a team of advisors.

Students receiving this scholarship are awarded up to $5,500 from the Thompson Foundation, with up to a $5,500 match from BGSU, for a total of $11,000. Students may already have scholarships from BGSU that would be the match.

The Thompson Working Families Achievement Scholarship is available to current first-semester freshman BGSU students who will complete their first year at BGSU at the end of the Spring 2024 semester. Students must have at least a 3.00 cumulative BGSU GPA and at least 30 earned credit hours at the end of Spring 2024. A 2024-2025 FAFSA must also be submitted by March 1, 2024. Community service in high school and/or college is also a plus, since community service hours are required for this scholarship program. Students will be expected to engage with the program by attending our required scholarship orientation program in April, other group programming and group service initiatives, and one-on-ones with their scholarship advisor throughout the academic year.
